ALLA SCOPERTA DEL DRACULA: VAN... Vámbéry

Nel numero 18 di Nemrod, compare un certo Vámbéry. Ma chi era costui? Secondo molti è stato il modello di quel Van Helsing divenuto archetipo dell'ammazza vampiri. A rendere credibile l'ipotesi è lo stesso Stoker che nel capitolo 23 del suo Dracula cita (per voce di Van Helsing) l'amico Arminius Vámbéry di Budapest. 

"I have studied, over and over again since they came into my hands, all the papers relating to this monster, and the more I have studied, the greater seems the necessity to utterly stamp him out. All through there are signs of his advance. Not only of his power, but of his knowledge of it. As I learned from the researches of my friend Arminius of Buda-Pesth, he was in life a most wonderful man. Soldier, statesman, and alchemist. Which latter was the highest development of the science knowledge of his time. He had a mighty brain, a learning beyond compare, and a heart that knew no fear and no remorse. He dared even to attend the Scholomance, and there was no branch of knowledge of his time that he did not essay.

Ma chi è Vámbéry? 

Studioso ungherese di gran fama (1832-1913), linguista, pubblicò il primo dizionario tedesco- turco, storico e viaggiatore, fu il primo occidentale ad aver raggiunto Samarcanda dopo aver attraversato mezza Asia, era amico di Stoker  e sicuramente fu lui a suggerirgli di ambientare il romanzo in Transilvania. Non solo fu sempre Vámbéry a raccontargli le tradizione legate ai vampiri e a Vlad Tepes. 

Uomo avventuroso e colto, conosceva almeno 30 tra lingue e dialetti e molto probabilmene fu una spia al servizio della corona inglese, univa l'amore per la modernità alla sapienza della tradizione.
